N.A.S.A - Strange Enough

Posted on July 14th 2010

This short piece was made over the period of approximately three and a half months on a very limited budget from Sam's living room in South London. We had been put in touch with Lorna Lavelle and Terrence Teh, who had pitched the idea of a music video using the artwork of Stephan Doitschinoff to N.A.S.A. for their track 'Strange Enough'. Stephan's characters would be turned into puppets and used to explore the themes of death and rebirth that populate his work.

We were helped along the way by many people who were very generous with their time and talents, and to whom we are very grateful.

Boing Boing are currently hosting the exclusive premiere of the video. Vimeo version will be available here in HD from friday.

Making the video

Stewart and Sam produced a Flash animatic over two days, sketching a rough path through Stephan's images. The next stage was to construct physical puppets of the characters and film the live puppetry in front of a green screen. This was then composited and animated by Stewart, Sam, and Tom using After Effects, Flash, and Maya, in between jobs, over the following months.
